Ardisia Solanacea of Primulaceae (Primrose family)

Common Name: Coral berry. Tamil name: Kolurucci

Ardisia is a genus belonging to the primulaceae family. They are moslty in the form of trees or shurbs and main character of the genus being the small tube found at the center of the flower. The flowers are generally pink-white in color and are mostly found in Semi-tropical areas. A Solanacea is shrub that grows to about 1.5 meters in height. The leafs are simple, arranged in an alternate manner, leaf margin in wavy and they have a smooth leathery texture. The leaf stalk and leaf measure around1.5 mm and 16 cm respectively, they are slightly upward bend. The inflorescence is the form of a axially downward facing cyme (shorter than leaf), the flowers are pink in color. The flower stalk is brown-rusty in color and measure around 2.1 cm. The calyx elements are rusty brown. All flowering parts of the plant are glossy and smooth. I have seen this plant species in Palakkad, Kodagu and Nilgiri lower hills areas.
