Asystasia chelonoides of Acanthaceae (Acanthus family)

Common Name: Turtle asystacia, Chinese voilet

Turtle asystacia is a native perennial seen in mid-altitude areas of Nilgiri Ghat road and is a sub-shrub growing on steep slopes. The young branches are squarish and have a tendency to droop down. The simple leafs are arranged in an opposite manner. The upper surface of the leaf is rough on feel. It is oval in shape with an acuminate tip. The leaf stalk and leaf measure around 4 mm and 7.2 cm respectively. The inflorescence is in the form of a raceme. The flower stalk measure around 1 mm and the tubular flower measures around 3 cm in length. The flower is whitish-purple in color with bright purple spots on the throat. Inside the flower 4 stamens are seen. The plant bears attractive flowers and suitable as an ornamental in home gardens and parks.
