Hypericum mysurense- family Hypericaceae (Hypericum family)

Common Name: English Mysore hypericum Tamil name: Avaran

Hypericum genus consists mostly of herbs and shrubs and there are more than 500 species in this genus. They are well studied for their bioactive compounds which are studied for their medicinal properties. H mysurense is found is endemic to the Western ghat and Sri Lanka. It is mostly found above 1500 msl and grows to around 1.5 meters in height. It is often seen on rocky phases, open shola areas and mountain grass land habitats. It is possible to locate them easily on road-sides of mountainous roads in higher elevation regions of the Western ghats. The simple leafs are arranged in an opposite and decussate manner. The leafs are narrow elliptic and nearly stalk-less. The flowers are large, measuring around 7 cm across. Several anthers are seen around the flower ring. The flowers are yellow in color and look very attractive.
