Melalevea linariifolia – Myrtaceae (Bottlebrush family)

Common Name: Narrow leaf paperbark, Snow-in-summer.

Evergreen tree of East-Australian origin that grows to around 2.5 meters in height. The bark of the tree is whitish-cream with heavy papery peelings The simple leaves are arranged in a decussate manner. The young leafs are reddish and narrow-lanceolate. They measure around 9 mm to 1.5 cm in length. The inflorescence is in the form of a spike which contain around 20 flower heads. The flowers are white and scented and appear like snow on the upper surface of the tree. The flowering branches continue to grow further after flowering. The petals measure around 2.5 mm and fall off easily. The flower encloses 5 stamen bundles. The fruit is in the form of a capsule. Narrow leaf paperbark is increasingly deployed in places like Coimbatore as an ornamental landscape tree.
