Dopartrium junceum- Scropholariaceae (Plantain family)

Common name: Rushlike dopartrium.

Rushlike Dopartrium is a small semiaquatic herb which grows to around 10-15 cm in height. It can survive in semi-submerged conditions. Locally found in abandoned paddy fields and such marshy areas. The plant looks delicate, succulent, glabrous. The plant is upright with few branching below. The leaf size decreases towards the flowering axis. The leaves are arranged in an opposite manner and they are narrow elliptic-lanceolate. The leaf is sessile and margin entire. The leaf measure around 2-2.5 cm in length they are sessile with the leaf base clasping the stem. The flowers are tubular, bi-lipped, zygomorphic and bisexual. The flowers are light pink or white. The upper lip of the flower has two clefts and the lower lip three. The flowers encloses 2 stamens and 2 staminodes. Dopartrium genus comes under plantain family and consists of 14 species, they are mostly native to Tropical southern Africa and South-west pacific. They have succulent stem, lanceolate leafs and found generally in areas like paddy fields. The plant is hardly noticed in field in spite of its beautiful small flowers.
