Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. Family- Fabaceae (pea family)

Common Name: Horse gram. Tamil Name: Akkamini, Kollu

Macrotyloma is genus under fabaceae they are generally perennial climbers having hairy stem and are trifoliolate. The flowers are generally Yellow-green in color. They can withstand drought like conditions. The seeds of horse gram are consumed and are considered very nutritional. M. Uniflora (horsegram) is a perennial rhizomatic climber, with hairy stem having trifoliolate leaf arrangement. The flowers occur in small bunches; cream-white in color with a dark violet spot in middle. The flowers are pea shaped and zygomorphic. The fruit is in the form of a pod and contain colored seeds which are kidney shaped. M uniflora is grown in dry rain deficient zones in Tamil Nadu. The plant can be seen grown commercially around Dindigul area of Tamilnadu near Kutharayar dam. When in full bloom the entire landscape looks very colorful and pretty.
