Oenothera lanciniata (Onagraceae- Evening Primrose family)

Common name: Cutleaf Evening Primrose

This annual herb of US origin grows to a length of about one foot.  Off late, it has spread itself to several parts of the globe and in some cases assumed the status of a noxious weed. It has a spreading hairy stem. The plant has simple leaf-arranged alternatively and are about 2 inches in length. Leafs are deeply lobed. Flowers are borne singly on axis. Flowers are about one inch across when fully open. The flowers are radially symmetrical and polypetalous. Petals are colored yellow. Sepals are 4 in number. Sepals are light green and are narrowly lance shaped and bend backwards. The petals are heart shaped they invariably fade into orange pink. The flower consists of 8 stamens and a single pistil. The fruit is a cylindrical dry capsule of about 5 cm length which split open. In India the plant has been reported states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Kerala. In Kodaikanal high-ranges the plant is often seen on wastelands, lawns and road-sides.
