Mecardonia procumbens (Plantaginaceae- plantain family)

Common Name: Baby Jump up.

Baby jump up is a near prostrate herb of Tropical America naturalized in India. It has a large global presence. In Coimbatore district it is often found near banks of water-bodies. The stem is four angled and green in color with patches of purple. The leaves are arranged in an opposite manner; the leaf margin is crenate. The leaf measure around 1 cm in length and are near sessile. The leaf shape is ovate; apex and base acute. The inflorescence is axillary and single. The flower is guarded by two leafy bracts which measure around 7 mm in length and are obovate in shape. The calyx has five segments each being 5 mm long. The flower is yellow in color and bi-lipped. The flower tube measure around 1 cm.  The flower has four stamens- didynamous. The fruit is in the form of a capsule.
