Pavetta tomentosa- Rubiaceae (Coffee family)

Common Name: Wooly pavetta.

Wooly pavetta grows to around 1.5 to 2 meters in height. The young branches appear rather square in cross section. The interpetiolar stipules are visible. The simple leafs are arranged in an opposite manner. The leafs are soft at feel: especially on the lower surface. They are elliptical in shape and measure around 16 cm length and 8 cm in breath. The leaf margin is entire. The leaf surface is dotted with several brown spots. The leaf stalk measure around 3 cm. The inflorescence is a much branched cyme. The calyx measure around 2 mm with four triangular sepals. The flowers are white in color, bisexual, tubular, fragrant with four petals. The flower measures around 1.5 cm in length. The stamens are inserted at the throat of the flower. The style sticks well out of the funnel shaped flower. The fruit is in the form of a berry which is round in shape. They appear initially green later turn black and measure around 5 mm. The plant is native to the Indian subcontinent. This shrub can be planted as an ornamental in house gardens.
