Commelina wightii (Commelinaceae (Dayflower family)

Common Name: Indian yellow dayflower

This rare herb is endemic to the South Western ghats and. The plant is procumbent, glabrous and grows to a height of about 6-7 cm. On the vertical stems the flowers are borne. The leaves measure around 5 cm in length and are ovate-lanceolate in shape; the base is cordate and the apex acute. The spathe measurers around 2.5 cm with an acuminate tip; white hairs can be seen on the spathe. The flower are yellow in color and measure around 2.4 cm across. The flower has three stamens and three staminodes (darker shade of yellow). This plant was encountered in Palakkad district of Kerala. Attractive plant with ornamental potential.
