Gloriosa superba (Colchicaceae family)

Common Name: Flame lily, Glory lily. Tamil Name: Chenkantal, Kathigaipoo

Glory lily has wide spread presence in Asia and African continent, it is a climber that can grow to around 3 meters. Often found around forest edges in Tamilandu. The simple sessile leaves are arranged in an alternate manner; the leaf margin in entire. The leaves are oval in shape. The plant is mostly glabrous. The leaf measure around 10-12 cm in length. The inflorescence is axillary and mostly solitary in nature. The flowers have colorful tepals- in shades of orange and yellow, each tepa measure around 6-7 cm in length. The flower has six stamens which are displayed prominently. The tip of the leaf has a tendril which helps the plant to spread over nearby vegetation. The fruit is in the form of an ellipsoid capsule with many seeds. Glory lily is the state flower of Tamilnadu. It has several medicinal applications in traditional Indian medicinal practices. Most parts of the plant are highly poisonous to both humans and cattle.
