Common Name: Sky flower, Golden dew drop.
Sky flower is an evergreen shrub native to Tropical America. This plant is very popular in India as an ornamental hedge plant. The yellow tinged leaves along with the sky blue flower and golden colored fruit make this plant a favorite among landscape gardeners. The simple leaves are arranged in an opposite and decussate manner; the stem is four angled. The leaves are colored in pale yellowish green color. The leaf stalk and leaf measure around 3 mm and 1.6-4 cm respectively (leaf size highly variable). The leaves are ovate in shape with an acuminate tip and a cuneate base. The inflorescence is the form of a terminal raceme; flowers through-out the year; flowers are highly irregular in shape. The flower petals are pale blue in color; the flower stalk measure around 2-3 mm; the calyx is green in color with 5 lanceolate teeth. The flower tube measurers around 6 mm and the flower across measure 9 mm. The tubular flower encloses 4 stamens. The fruit is in the form of a beaked berry around 6 mm in length. The berries are initially green in color and change to golden color on maturity. The fruit contains 2 seeds. Sky flower is perhaps the most sort after hedge plant in India. The berries are highly toxic. The seeds dont seem to germinate.
