Cleome speciosa – Cleomaceae (Spider flower family)

Common name: Showy spider flower

Showy spider flower is native to tropical America, probably introduced into India as an ornamental plant. It is an annual that grows to around 3 feet in height. The plant grows upright with little branching. The flowers are attractive and come various shades of pink/ or white. The leafs are palmate and leaflets are of varying sizes. The leaf shape is elliptic-lanceolate. Each leaf consists of 5-7 leaflets. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme. Foliaceus bracts can be seen on the flowering twig they are unifoliate and ovate. The flowers are large with 4 petals which is generally pink. The petals are lanceolate, narrow and clawed. The flowers are bisexual, actinomorphic with four separate petals. The stamens numbering 6 numbers are inserted to the elongated androphore. The carpels and found on and elongated gynophore. The fruit is in the form of a capsule about 10 cm long. Showy spider flower is an ornamental plant.
