Eleiotis monophyllos (Fabaceae-Pea family)

Common Name: One-leaf glycine.

One-leaf glycine is a small herb very rarely seen in the Western Ghats; seen more towards the Eastern Ghat area. In Coimbatore district (rare occurrence in some dry deciduous slopes of WG) is it emerges after heavy showers and lasts for a few days. The plant is prostrate and forms small mats on dry open forest floor, it has a triangular stem which is pink in color and mostly glabrous. The simple leaves are arranged in an alternate manner; the leaf margin is entire. Invariably, some black prominent markings are seen on the leaf lamella. The leaf is obovate in shape and retuse. The leaf stalk and leaf measure around 5 mm and 1 cm respectively. The inflorescence is an axillary few flowering cyme. The peduncle measures around 4.5 mm and individual flower stalk measure around 2-3 mm each. The pea shaped flowers are dark pink in color and measure around 3-4 mm each. Two small stipule like leafs are seen at the base of the main leaf they measure around 4 mm each. The fruit is in the form of a ‘c’-shaped pod which is smooth in feel and have reddish markings. The pod stalk and pod measure around 2 mm and 6 mm respectively. The pod contains a single seed.
