Common Name: Acampe orchid
Acampe orchid is native to the Indian sub-continent and has a wide distribution range. This monopodial (the stem grows from a single bud) orchid grows on trees as an epiphyte. It makes large conspicuous clumps on tree bark and grows robustly. This perennial orchid can be seen around dry and moist forest ranges of Western Ghats. The word ‘Acampe’, refers to the brittle rigid flowers. The inflorescence is in the form of a corymbs. The fragrant flowers are cream in color with red lines. Acampe orchid is a sturdy drought tolerant orchid. The plant is can be propagated by cuttings. The fruit is in the form of a capsule. Acampe orchid is often sold as a garden plant. It is the larval host plant for Orchid tit butterfly.
