Common name: Lemon savory
I saw this herb at locations above 2000 msl in Western Ghats. Mostly seen around grasslands and grows to a height of about 12 cm. The plant has prominent aromatic lemony smell when crushed. The stem is quadrangular and hairy. The simple leaves are arranged in an decussate opposite manner. The leafs are near sessile, leaf shape ovate and leaf margin entire. The leaf is gland dotted. The inflorescence is axillary with flowers arranged in a round around the leaf axis. The calyx is hairy tubular and ribbed with 5 ciliate sepals. The purple flowers are bi-lipped, zygomorphic, tubular and bisexual. The petals measure round 1 cm. The upper lip has 2 segments and the lower has 3 segments. The flower encloses 4 stamens which are held within the flower tube. Micromeria genus belongs to the Lamiaceae family and has a vast global distribution. They are aromatic herbs with square stems. Inflorescence being in the form of a whorled cyme, calyx 5 lobed and have a bi-lipped sessile flowers. The stamens do not stick out of the flower tube.
