Common Name: Bleeding heart
Bleeding heart is an ornamental climber which can grow to around 3 meters. The plant is an ornamental hybrid and is much sort after in Tamilnadu for its crimson flower and purple colored persistent calyx. The stems are square in shape and young shoots are dark purple in color. The simple leaves are arranged in an opposite manner the leaf margin is entire; the veins on the leaf are prominently extrude out of the lamella on the lower leaf surface. The leaves have a think papery feel. The leaf stalk and leaf measure around 1.7 cm and 17 cm respectively. The leaves are oval in shape with an acumiate tip and a cuneate base. The inflorescence is in the form axillary branching cyme. The flower stalk and flower tube measure around 1.3 cm and 2 cm respectively. The calyx is five parted united below; the calyx teeth are purple in color, ovate in shape and each measure around 1.5 cm. The flower petals are crimson in color, the petals measure around 1.4 cm and are clawed. The flower encloses a few coiled anthers and a single very long (5 cm long style which protrude out of the flower tube. The calyx is persistent and stay attached to the plant even after the flower withers.
