Rhynchosia suaveolens (Fabaceae- Pea family)

Common Name: Sweet-scented snoutbean

Sweet-scented snout bean is a herb that grows to around 1.5 feet, occasionally seen on dry forest slopes of Coimbatore. The alternate leaves are trifoliate; margin entire; the leaves have a soft velvety feel. The entire plant is covered with small white hairs. The distances between leafing nodes measure around 6-7 cm. The leaf stalk measure around 5 cm and has small white hairs. The terminal leaflet is ovate in shape ;leaflet and is the largest; measures around 5.2 cm; the leaf base is rounded and apex acute. The two side-leaflets are smaller and measure around 4.6 cm each, they are ovate in shape with a slightly unequal at base. The inflorescence is an axially cyme which has several 2 flowering nodes. The flowers are yellow in color and pea shaped. The calyx is long lanceolate with an acuminate apex (5 teethed). The yellow hood petal has a small chocolate colored marking at its center. The stamens are arranged in a diadelphous manner. The fruit is in the form of a pod: often seen paired. The pod stalk measure around 7 mm and the pod measures around 1 cm in length. The pod is oblong in shape, beaked and two seeded. Small constriction is seen between the seeds.
