Evolvulus nummularius (Convolvulaceae- Morning glory family)

Common name: Round-leaf bindweed. Tamil Name: Elikkadu ilai

Round-leaf bindweed is a prostrate herb native to tropical America. Often found on road-sides, fallow lands and well watered lawns in Tamilnadu. The simple leafs are arranged in an alternate manner; leaf margin is entire. The leaves measure around 5-6 mm and are round in shape with a heart shaped base and a rounded apex. The inflorescence is axillary: one or two flowers are seen on axis. The flowers are five petaled, white in color and joined below to form a tubular flower. The flowers bloom during the morning time. They measure around 6 mm across. The fruit is in the form of a globose capsule. The plant is used as a vegetable in North East India.
