Purple heart is native to Mexico and introduced to India as an ornamental plant for its attractive purple colored leaves and pink flowers. In some countries it is considered as an invasive. The plant grows to a height of about 15 cm and covers ground quickly. The stem of the plant is fleshy, succulent, purple in color and have a watery sap. The purple colored leaves are sessile thick-set and the base of the leaf is strapped to the stem. The inflorescence in the form of a cymose clusters enclosed in bracts. The flowers are pink in color with three petals. The flower measurers around 1.5 cm in length. Purple heart is propagated via cuttings. Purple heart is a popular garden plant in Tamilnadu.
