Cordia dichotoma (Boraginaceae-Forget-me-not family)

Common Name: Indian cherry, Lasora. Tamil Name: Naruvilli.

Indian cherry grows to a height of about 7-8 meters the branches tend to arch downward. The trunk of the tree is grey in color the bark in mature tree is furrowed. The leaf stalk and leaf length measure around 3.5 cm and 13 cm respectively; leaf margin is crenate. The leaves are ovate-orbicular in shape and have a rounded base and acute apex. The inflorescence is in the form of terminal or axillary cymes. The fragrant flowers can be of three types: male, female or bisexual. The calyx is bell shaped and green in color. The flowers measure around 1 cm in length and are tubular. The petals are white in color and curved backwards. The fruit (1.5 cm) is round in shape and green colored. When ripe the fruit turn pale pink in color. The fruit is pulpy and sticky and it encloses a single hard seed. The calyx elements stay attached at the base of the fruit. Indian cherry fruit is edible; the unripe fruits are made in pickles and the leaf is used as fodder. This tree is occasionally seen in Coimbatore district. The tree has an attractive shape: round small canopy with downward arching branches- and can be planted for its ornamental value in gardens and road-sides.
