Common Name. Putranjeva. Tamil Name. Puttira-civi. Putranjeva is a handsome diocious (male and female flowers in different plant) evergreen tree that grows to a height of about 15 meters. The tree grows to height and then the branches tend to drupe down. The simple leaves are arranged alternatively; the leaf stock measure around 1 cm and the leaf length is around 5-8 cm. The leaf is elliptic-oval in shape and have an oblique base and an acuminate tip. The leaf margin is mildly serrate. The male flowers are produced in axillary clusters and are yellow in color. The female flowers are produced on the leaf axis; around 1-3 flowers are seen on each such axis. The fruit is in the form of a drupe which is ellipsoid in shape and contains a single stony seed. The seeds are made into a necklace and put on children to ward off evil spirits-hence the name Purtranjiva. The plant has several medicinal applications in traditional systems of Indian medicine. Putranjiva is not a common tree in Coimbatore- a few can be sighted as avenue trees. Putranjeva tree is a native of Indian sub-continent
